Mining · Water · Finance · Risk

Mining is one of the most water-exposed business sectors. It depends on water for production but in return can impact availability and quality of water for others that share the same resource. Both directions carry risk, and climate change is amplifying it.

Every mine is different, and its water context is intrinsically local. That makes water risk hard to manage from the top and even harder to read from a distance. Yet that is precisely where the pressure is landing. Water risk is financial risk. The language around water risk and management is often not well understood at corporate, finance, or downstream off-take level.

Disclosure requirements are tightening this further, moving water from voluntary impact reporting to mandatory quantified financial disclosure. That shift places reporting obligations on groups that do not own or manage the underlying information. Those responsible for strategic decisions on water dependency and risk exposure often lack the tools to translate raw information into relevant insights.
